In 2015, four friends gathered in a cafe for a meeting which resulted in a napkin drawing of a flying car. Today, the creators of Alef Aeronautics, a startup located in California, have been granted permission by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to begin experimenting with their “Model A” flying car.
On June 27, the company revealed that it has been granted authorization to commence trials of what they refer to as the “world’s first actual flying car” after obtaining a unique certification for airworthiness from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
In October 2022, prototypes and production mock-ups of the car were revealed by the company. This follows after the initial reveal.
According to experts, for consumers to consider using it on a daily basis, the car must first comply with the safety standards set by the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration. Alef has set a goal to have their cars flying by 2025.
According to senior consultant of Enterprise Canada Lucas Meyer, although we are currently not at a point of regular normal use, the mere discussion of it is astonishing. He shared this during an appearance on CTV’s The Debate with Mike Le Couteur on Tuesday.
The cost of Alef’s flying car is set at US$300,000 and it can travel up to 175 kilometres. The car is available for pre-order on the company’s official website. This vehicle has the ability to vertically take off and land, and also navigate through the air and on roads, avoiding traffic.
According to Alef, their goal is to address problems related to traffic congestion through the development of a flying car, which they believe will provide the ultimate solution for commuters.
